In episode 134 of Hemispheric Views, Andrew and I discussed his appearance on The Omni Show and what it means to love certain apps on your computer. The Mac is home to many beloved third-party apps, whether they be NetNewsWire, MarsEdit, Audio Hijack, Pastebot, Acorn, iA Writer, BBEdit or the recently-acquired Pixelmator Pro. The list is endless.
Back in episode 097, when we undertook our ‘Duel of the Defaults’, we (and many of our listeners and their friends online) wrote lists of their default apps and third-party alternatives. Inspired by Andrew’s love of OmniFocus and harking back to that kind of app highlighting, I thought that I’d take a moment here to mention an app that makes my life easier every day. NB: this is not an advertisement—just a little show of appreciation!
Working in communication and media for my paid employment, specifically video editing and photography while also handling audio constantly for podcasting, I love having an easy-to-use utility with fantastic presets for converting video, audio and image files. That app is Permute.

Permute has been around for a while, and if you haven’t tried it, I’d highly recommend giving it a go. Whether you simply want to compress a video’s size (while maintaining high-quality playback), change an image from PNG to JPEG or convert audio files without having to add them to your Music app, then it’s worthy of a place in your dock. I love that it’s as simple as dragging and dropping a file into the window, choosing the desired file format, then hitting the ‘Start’ button.
Anyway, that’s it! Which third-party apps do you love on your Mac? Tell us at Hemispheric Views on Discord, Mastodon or Micro.blog. It’s worth showcasing the work of your favourite third-party developers!
