3×2 Photocast

For the past few years, I’ve been extremely fortunate to produce the Hemispheric Views podcast with my two great friends, Andrew Canion and Jason Burk. It has led me to meet more wonderful people online and helped me to develop practical skills that have benefited other audio projects in my research and paid work, such as Really Specific Stories and Voices of BlueScope.

On Hemispheric Views, we always aim to discuss a variety of topics, whether technological, social or just plain silly. We want to be genuine, light-hearted and accessible, which can be challenging when your shared interest (as co-hosts) is digital technology. We’re constantly learning about the process and each other and are grateful for our listeners’ attention and interaction.

Recently, one topic that has come up repeatedly and much more often is photography. We all enjoy it, although you could say that Jason and I are a bit more nuts about dedicated cameras. Jason, in particular, had the desire to discuss it more, based on our chats off the show about cameras and the experience of using photo services like Glass. Beyond the occasional ‘Photography Corner’ segment on Hemispheric Views, which may include general stuff about cameras and related devices and services, Jason had the idea of creating a side audio project about photos that we love online, with more in-depth thoughts about composition, lighting, technique and so on. I was excited too and thought, why not?!

Jason’s cool idea became the new 3×2 Photocast, which you can now find at 3×2.pics. The premise is simple: ‘Two friends chatting about people’s awesome photos they come across on the web!’ We each bring up three photos, hence the title.

To be clear, we’re not professional photographers—we’re enthusiasts! Also, we’ve adopted what we feel is a manageable monthly schedule, with episodes that run for no more than 20 to 30 minutes. This is a fun side project that takes the photographic burden off our main show with Andrew, pops up in the occasional off-week and enables us to discuss visual media (in audio form, somewhat hilariously) in a dedicated feed elsewhere.

We’ve launched 3×2 with an introductory explanation and a first full instalment that sets the format for episodes that will follow.

Anyway, we hope that you’ll enjoy the show! Feel free to connect with us on Mastodon to join the conversation and let us know about photos that you love.

Also, if you haven’t given it a try, check out Hemispheric Views to hear our lunacy as a trio on a fortnightly basis!
